Aphididae (true aphids)

This is the largest family of aphids which belongs to the superfamily of Aphidoidea and the suborder of Sternorrhyncha. Species of Aphididae have distinctive tubes on their abdomens called cornicles or siphunculi. These can emit a pheromone which appears to warn other members of the aphid colony of approaching predators or other dangers.

They are a group of small, plant sucking bugs which can cause substantial crop damage and may transmit plant viruses. They typically include a fast developing stage with the wingless females reproducing parthenogenically and giving birth to live nymphs.
