This genus of aphids contains nearly 100 species feeding mainly on grasses. It includes the economically important grain aphid. The general appearance is similar to the species of the genus Macrosiphum. The colour is usually brownish and the antennae are black. The siphunculi are long and black. Some species are heteroecious and require 2 hosts to complete their life cycle.
