Melanaphis van der Goot, 1917

This genus of aphids contains around 25 species that are widely distributed, e.g. in the Americas, Europe and Asia. A number of them are important agricultural pests like Melanaphis sacchari or M. pyraria. They infest mainly gramineous crops like sugarcane, sorghum or maize, but also fruit and nut trees as well as forest trees.

Melanaphis belongs to the subfamily Aphidinae and includes small to medium-sized aphids related to the genus Rhopalosiphum. They have short siphunculi and winged adults have dark forewing veins.
