Monellia caryella (Fitch, 1855) - (blackmargined pecan aphid)

This aphid is found in the Americas and since the 1970s in parts of the Mediterranean region. It infests pecan trees, causing chlorosis and sooty moulds on the leaves. Heavy infestations may reduce tree growth.

The eggs are the overwintering stage and hatch in the spring. The newly emerged nymphs feed on the young foliage and mature in about a week to wingless, viviparous females. These reproduce asexually throughout the summer, often with 20 or more successive generations. In autumn, winged males and females develop which mate and lay the overwintering eggs.
