Tetraneura Hartig, 1841 - (elm gall aphids)

This genus of aphids contains around 35 species which are widely distributed, especially in Asia. They induce galls on elm leaves and feed on grass roots as secondary host. The galls on elms are located on the upper leaf surface and are smooth and shiny. The galls are stalked and either green, brownish or reddish yellow in colour.

On grasses, the aphids feed on the roots and are often attended by ants. Several species are regarded as harmful to crops and elms. For example, Tetraneura nigriabdominalis can damage rice and cereals.
