Dendroctonus Erichson 1836

This genus contains around 20 species of bark beetles which are mostly found in temperate and subtropical regions of North America. There are also two native and 1 introduced species in Europe and northern Asia. The species attack conifer trees and are often responsible for tree death.

Adults may be as small as 2-3 mm (D. frontalis) or up to 10 mm (D. terebrans). The species can be distinguished by morphological characters, their host species and the shape of the egg galleries.
