Calonectria De Not. 1867

The species of this genus are saprophytic and pathogenic. The plant pathogens can cause serious diseases. Typically, the species have a larger host range, including field crops, fruit and other trees as well as ornamentals. The symptoms of Calonectria infections include crown and root rot, leaf spot, stem lesions and defoliation. For example, Calonectria ilicicola and C. pauciramosa are both widely distributed and infect crops like groundnuts, soybeans or eucalyt trees.

The species have Cylindrocladium-like anamorphic forms which are important for morphological characterization. Sexual compatibility using standardized media and DNA sequencing are also important for identification. The morphological characters include vesicle shape, stipe extension length and macroconidial septation and dimensions. Ascospore numbers, septation and dimensions are also relevant characters.

Type species: Calonectria pyrochroa

For reviews of the genus see Vitale et al. (2013) and Marin-Felix et al. (2017).
