Neonectria Wollenw. 1917

The fungi of this genus are either saprobes or plant pathogens. The plant pathogens cause canker on forest and fruit trees. Important pathogens are Neonectria ditissima and N. faginata, both are found in Europe and America. Apart from canker and other diseases, they cause the "beech bark disease disease" in North America in combination with the beech scale, Cryptococcus fagisuga. In Europe, a similar disease has been described as "beech bark necrotic disease", again associated with the above 2 species, Cryptococcus fagisuga, as well as with other insects.

The genus is characterized by the structure of the perithecia and by DNA sequences. It is closely related to the genus Cylindrocarpon and various Cylindrocarpon species have been described as anamorph forms of Neonectria species.

Type species: Neonectria ramulariae.

For details see the review of this genus by Chaverri et al., 2011.
