Neonectria faginata (M.L. Lohman, A.M.J. Watson & Ayers 1943) Castl. & Rossman 2006

The fungus infects the bark of beech trees in North America, contributing to the beech bark disease. That disease is initiated by the exotic beech scale insect (Cryptococcus fagisuga) which infests the bark of beech trees and facilitates infections by N. faginata or N. ditissima. The wounds inflicted by the scale insects are entry points for the fungus.

The fungus produces bright red, spherical fruiting bodies (perithecia) that release sexual elongated ascospores, approximately 12 x 6 µm in size. These spread through the scale insects or by water splashes. Asexual microconidia, around 10-15 µm long and macroconida, around 100 µm long can be also produced and are airborne.
