Neonectria coccinea (Pers.) Rossman & Samuels 1999 - (beech bark canker)
This fungus infects the bark of beech trees in Europe and North America, causing beech bark canker. It is closely related to Neonectria faginata which contributes to the beech bark disease in North America. On infected beech trees, patches of the bark die off and peal off and produce small (0.5 - 1 mm) bright red fruiting bodies. Heavy infections lead to a decline of the tree.
