Coccidae - (soft scales)
The family belongs to the superfamily of Coccoidea and contains more than 1000 species. Several are important pests, others are considered beneficial as producers of honeydew or wax.
The females live as sessile colonies and have short legs and antennae. Males are winged with well developed forewings and do not feed. Females develop through 2-3, males through 4 immature stages. The first instars or crawlers are mobile and disperse through the air.
