Physokermes Targioni-Tozzetti, 1868 - (spruce bud scales)

This genus of soft scales contains around 10 species which infest mainly spruce trees. Several species have spread to other countries, causing outbreaks and considerable damage. For example, Physokermes hemicryphus is native to Europe and regarded there to be an important source of honeydew for bees and other insects. On the other hand, it is considered a pest in North America.
