Anopheles hyrcanus (Pallas, 1771)
Anopheles hyrcanus is part of a complex of around 30 closely related species that vary in their distribution, biology, ecology and competence to transmit malaria. These are collectively referred to as the "Anopheles hyrcanus group" or "An. hyrcanus s.l.". The members can often only be distinguished by DNA analysis. The group has a wide distribution in Asia and can be also found in southern and central parts of Europe. The mosquitoes bite humans, other mammals and birds.
An. hyrcanus s.s. is a malaria vector in Central Asia and often transmits Plasmodium vivax. Occasionally, it has been also recorded from southern Europe. The An. hyrcanus group includes also several other important malaria vectors and pest species, for example:
