Anopheles peditaeniatus (Leicester, 1908)
This mosquito is found in southern Asia from Iran to southern China and further south to Indonesia. It can be common in some areas, e.g. in parts of Bangladesh (Bashar & Tuno, 2014) or in Thailand (Choochote, 2011). A. peditaeniatus is highly attracted to cattle, but also bites humans regularly. Breeding has been reported from various water bodies, primarily water tanks, lakes, canals, paddy fields, marshes and pools.
A. peditaeniatus is a suspected malaria vector and has been reported to carry Plasmodium vivax. It can also experimentally transmit filariasis caused by Brugia malayi and has been incriminated as a vector of Japanese encephalitis. Taxonomically, it is closely related to Anopheles lesteri.
