Anopheles paraliae Sandosham, 1959

This mosquito is is found in coastal areas of southern Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam, in particular in brackish and peaty water. Taxonomically, it belongs to the Hyrcanus Group, in the subgenus Anopheles, and is closely related to Anopheles lesteri, both morphologically and biologically.

It was previously considered to be a subspecies of A. lesteri. Pairing experiments between both species produced viable progenies and genetic differences between both species were small (Taai et al. 2013). The separation of both species is mainly based on the different habitat and the different distribution pattern. In addition, the adults show the following differences in the colouration of their wings (see image at the right):

  1. Most parts of the wing tip of A. lesteri has a light fringe, whereas in A. paraliae there is only a small lighter spot at the wing tip (arrows on right margin of image).
  2. The darker sections on the anal vein near the hind margin of the wing are usually more pronounced in A. paraliae and may be even fusing to one long dark section (arrows at bottom margin on images).
