Pseudococcidae (mealybugs)
This family of plant sucking insects contains more than 2000 species. Many form colonies and are important plant pests as well as vectors of plant viruses.
The females are wingless, oval in shape, soft-bodied and characterized by the extensive mealy or filamentous wax secretion. In contrast to the related scale insects (e.g. the Diaspididae) they have legs and can move slowly. The males have wings and fly actively.
