Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell, 1895) - (sugarcane mealybug)

This mealybug is found in most sugarcane growing areas. It initially infests newly-planted sugarcane rhizomes, up to 30 cm of depth. As the plants grow, colonies are formed mainly around the nodes and underneath the leaf sheaths. Serious infestations can lead to growth reductions and occasionally to death of young shoots. This mealybug is further a vector of the Sugarcane bacilliform virus.

Sorghum may also be attacks sometimes. The young crawlers can disperse through the air and older nymphs may be transported by ants to different parts of the same plant or to neighbouring plants.
