Remarks Karlovsky group studies fungal and plant secondary metabolites such as mycotoxins and plant root exudates. Genetic analysis and manipulation, chemical analysis and metabolic profiling are major techniques used. Most of our projects focus on chemical interactions of fungi with other fungi, plants and invertebrates, and on enzymatic detoxification of mycotoxins. Selected highlights: elucidation of biological functions of mycotoxin zearalenone and plant metabolite citramalic acid; discovery of infection-specific metabolites in the interaction between Brassica napus and Verticillium longisporum; elucidation of the role of fusaric acid in interaction between mycoparasites and their prey; demonstration of the induction of defense metabolites of Aspergillus nidulans by fungivorous invertebrates; and identification of plant volatile biomarkers of fungal infection.
