Phyllosticta Pers. 1818

This genus contains more than 100 species of plant pathogenic and endophytic fungi. Several are important pathogens of crops and cause leaf spot, leaf blotch, black spot and rot diseases. For example Phyllosticta citricarpa causes black spot on citrus and Phyllosticta ampelicida causes black rot of grapevine.

The species of the genus are characterized by producing simple, brown and thin-walled conidiomata which form round to oval, hyaline and unicellular conidia. The spores are surrounded by a thin sticky sheath and have an apical appendage. The teleomorph forms of Phyllosticta have been described under the genera Guignardia and Leptodothiorella.

Type species: Phyllosticta cruenta
