The fungus order of Botryosphaeriales contains many endophytes. However, it also includes opportunistic plant pathogens. These cause diseases on woody plants and result in die-back, cankers, or even tree death. While morphological characters have been widely used in the past for identifying the species, the emphasis is now mainly on DNA-based techniques.
