Burkholderia Yabuuchi et al. 1993, emend. Gillis et al. 1995

The genus contains nearly 100 species of mobile, Gram-negative, rodshaped and obligate aerobic bacteria. Several are important plant pathogens like Burkholderia glumae causing panicle blight and grain rot of rice. Others are human pathogens. Some species are also beneficial as antagonists of plant diseases (see Burkholderia antagonists).

The type species is Burkholderia cepacia.
