Burkholderia (antagonists) Yabuuchi et al. 1993, emend. Gillis et al. 1995

The genus contains nearly 100 species of mobile, Gram-negative, rodshaped and obligate aerobic bacteria. Several are important plant pathogens (see the plant pathogenic species of Burkholderia) and others are human pathogens. However, several species are beneficial antagonists of plant diseases. This page deals with the latter group. For example antagonistic strains of Burkholderia cepacia are commercially produced against a number of fungal diseases.
