Burkholderia cenocepacia Vandamme et al. 2003 - (banana fingertip rot)
This bacterium causes banana fingertip rot, a minor banana disease in some regions. The disease is characterised by a distorted shape of the banana fruit (often being narrower at the tip), rot of the fruit and a blackened tip. It can also infect other crops (Balandreau et al., 2001) and some strains cause cystic fibrosis (also called cepacia syndrome), a human disease (Fiore et al., 2001). Taxonomically it is closely rated to Burkholderia cepacia and has been regarded as a genomovar of that bacterium until 2003.
