Anopheles farauti Laveran

The mosquito is found in Papua New Guinea, neighbouring islands and Australia. It feeds on humans, domestic animals and other mammals. A. farauti is an important malaria vector. It is part of a group of 8 closely related sibling species, the A. farauti s.l. group. The distribution of this group of sibling species extends from eastern Indonesia (Maluku island group) to some islands of Vanuatu. Several other species of the group are also known malaria vectors. A. farauti s.s. breeds in brackish water.

For other sibling species see:
Anopheles hinesorum
Anopheles irenicus
Anopheles oreios
Anopheles torresiensis
