The mosquito is found in Papua New Guinea, neighbouring islands and Australia. It is an important malaria vector and belongs to a closely related group of 8 sibling species, several of which are also known malaria vectors. The distribution of the group of sibling species extends from eastern Indonesia (Maluku island group) to some islands of Vanuatu. A. farauti s.s. is found in brackish water.
