16SrXII phytoplasma group (stolbur phytoplasma group)
Phytoplasmas in this group infect a large variety of plants and are transmitted by planthoppers of the family Cixiidae. Like for other phytoplasma groups, assignment to the group is based on the 16S rRNA structure. The reference strain for this group is STOL11 of Candidatus Phytoplasma solani. That phytoplasma causes various crop disease, including the important "bois noir" disease of grapevines. Around 10 subgroups have been described for this and other phytoplasmas included in the group (e.g. see Wei et al., 2007).
