Sordariales

This order of ascomycete fungi contains more than 100 genera with a wide range of life forms. These include saprobic, plant pathogenic and wood inhabiting species. Some are also antagonistic to plant diseases (see the antagonistic Sordariales). This page deals with plant pathogenic species only. It includes for example Monosporascus cannonballus, an important soil-borne plant pathogen that infects mainly cucurbits. The members of the Sordariales have membranous or leather-like ascomata. The ascospores are hyaline or brown and often have appendages or sheaths.
