Rhynchophorus Herbst, 1795 - (giant palm weevils)

The weevils of this genus can be recognized by their large size and their feeding biology on palm trees. The adults may exceed 4 cm in length and often have a pattern of black or red.

The female chews a hole near the base of a palm frond, the youngest part of the trunk, to deposit eggs. The larvae feed on the developing trunk, often destroying the growing point and killing the palm. Several species are serious threats to palm plantations.
