Leptographium wageneri (W.B. Kendr. 1962) M.J. Wingf. 1985

This fungus is found in in western North America, where it causes the black-stain root disease on pines (Leptographium wageneri var. ponderosum), Douglas fir (Leptographium wageneri var. pseudotsugae), and other conifers. Among the pine species, Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) and ponderosa pine (P. ponderosa) frequently become infected. Infections result in yellow foliage, defoliation, and tree mortality. Over a 10 year period, mortality rates can reach and exceed 50% for seriously infected trees (Jacobi et al., 2008). Bark beetles like Dendroctonus valens are being suspected of being involved in the spread of the disease (Owen et al., 2005).
