This wood-decaying fungus is a member of the Heterobasidion annosum group (previously H. annosum intersterile group S). The main host is spruce (Picea). It can be common in some areas. For example, in Latvia between 30 and 40% of the spruce trees are infected by H. parviporum, resulting in extensive root rot, dieback and tree death (Klavina et al., 2021). Infections often occur as disease centres, because neighbouring trees infect each other through root contact.
