Heterobasidion (genus)

This genus of basidiomycetous fungi contains important forest pathogens which attack the wood (heart rot) and the roots of different trees, mainly conifers. They form the familiar flat, polypore fruiting bodies (basidiocarps) on the trunks of infected trees. Especially the species from the Heterobasidion annosum complex are economically important.

Type species: Heterobasidion annosum
