Gaeumannomyces Arx & D.L. Olivier 1952
This is a small genus of plant pathogenic fungi with around 20 species. The genus is widely distributed and most species infect the roots of cereals or grasses, causing diseases like root rot and decline, as well as dieback and stem or sheath rot. The most important species is Gaeumannomyces graminis which causes the take-all disease of wheat. Gaeumannomyces species produce unitunicate asci and the genus is closely related to Pyricularia.
