This forma specialis causes a lethal wilt on several species of palms. It is restricted to some southern parts of North America (Florida and Texas) and to a few species of palms. Infected palms develop a characteristic one-side wilt on the fronds with the midrib also showing discoloration and internal decay on the affected side. Symptoms start on the oldest fronds and then progress to the younger fronds. Palms typically die within 2-3 months after the appearance of the first symptoms with all fronds drying up at that stage. The palm species most commonly affected are Syagrus romanzoffiana (queen palm) and Washingtonia robusta (Mexican fan palm).
