Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melongenae Matuo & K. Ishig 1958 - (Fusarium wilt of eggplant)

The fungus causes a serious soil-borne disease of eggplants in the Mediterranean region and in Asia. It may also infect related plants like tomato or green pepper after artificial inoculations. The fungus has further been isolated from several symptomless weeds. On eggplant it causes leaf chlorosis, vascular discolorations on the stem and finally plant death. The fungus can persist in the soil or in plant debris as chlamydospores. There have been few attempts to develop resistant eggplant cultivars. The page Fusarium oxysporum gives a general overview of the biology of this fungus.
