Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lactucae J.C. Hubb. & Gerik 1993 - (Fusarium wilt of lettuce)
Like other forms of Fusarium oxysporum, this forma specialis infects the host plant through the roots and invades the vascular system of the host plant which then shows brown discolouration in the stem. It causes a wide-spread and serious disease of lettuce. Yield losses may exceed 50% on susceptible cultivars. Infected plants show a general chlorosis with necrosis and stunting followed by plant collapse and death. The pathogen persists in the soil and in plant debris.
Three pathological races of the fungus have been described previously. Race 1 has a world-wide distribution, while races 2 and 3 are restricted to a few Asian countries. A new race 4 has been reported from the Netherlands and Belgium around 2015 (Claerbout et al., 2018).
