Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. albedinis (Kill. & Maire) W.L. Gordon 1965 - (Bayoud disease of date palm)

The fungus infects date palms in Northern Africa. The fronds whiten (bayoud = white in arabic), dry up and wilt. The infected palm dies several months after appearance of the first symptoms. The disease was originally known from Morocco. It subsequently spread to Algeria, killing an estimated 15 million trees until around 2000 in these two countries. More recently it has been reported from Mauritania and is now suspected to occur also in Tunesia and Egypt. Management involves the use of resistant cultivars.
