16SrIV phytoplasma group - (coconut lethal yellows phytoplasma group)
The species and strains in this group infect mainly palm trees. It includes Candidatus Phytoplasma palmae and related forms which are found in Central America, southern North America and Africa. This group has been also reported from Papua New Guinea on bananas and a related strain appears to infect coconut palms there, causing a lethal yellowing type disease (Davis et al. 2012).
The palm diseases caused by members of this group are called "lethal yellowing" and 'Ca. P. palmae' is the best studied example. The group is characterized by its 16S ribosomal RNA. See also the "lethal decline" group of palm diseases.
