16SrXXII phytoplasma group - (Nigerian coconut lethal decline phytoplasma group)
This group includes several phytoplasmas which cause lethal coconut diseases in Africa and are related to the Nigerian Awka wilt disease of coconut. It has been based on strain LDN (GeneBank no. Y14175), see Wei et al., 2007. Outside Africa, several authors have also reported phytoplasmas from other hosts with sequences related to this group.
The palm diseases caused by the members of this group are called "lethal decline" and the group is related to the "lethal yellowing" type diseases of palms. Two subgroups have been proposed under the XXII group, subgroup A and subgroup B (Harrison et al. 2014). The species listed below and the following common names have been used to refer to the phytoplasmas and diseases in this group:
• Cape St. Paul wilt disease (Ghana and Ivory Coast, subgroup B)
• Kribi disease of coconut (Cameroon)
• KaincopĂ© disease of coconut (Togo)
