Candidatus Phytoplasma cocosnigeriae - (Awka disease of coconut)
This phytoplasma causes the Nigerian coconut lethal decline or Awka disease. It was first described by Tymon et al. (1998) and is based on strain LDN (GeneBank accession no. Y14175). The name 'Phytoplasma cocosnigeriae' was proposed for this strain by the Phytoplasma taxonomy group of the International Research Programme for Comparative Mycoplasmology (IRPCM 2004). However, there is not formal description of this name.
A closely related strain (LYDM-178R) has been described as Candidatus Phytoplasma palmicola and is associated with a lethal coconut disease in Mozambique. Both phytoplasmas belong to subgroup A of the 16SrXXII phytoplasma group.
