This genus of grasses includes around 100 species. It is common in tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, but also found in other regions. Crops are often affected by the weedy members of the genus include cereals, other field crops like soybeans, cotton or sugarcane, as well as plantation crops like coffee.

The genus is closely related to the genus Moorochloa (see Moorochloa eruciformis) which is a replacement name for the genus Brachiaria, and there has been frequent disagreements between authors about the assignments of specific species to these two genera. Here the GBIF taxonomic system is used.
