Podosphaera xanthii (Castagne 1845) U. Braun & Shishkoff 2000
The fungus causes a serious and wide-spread powdery mildew disease on cucurbits. The fungus also infects sunflower, ornamentals and some other crops. The infected plants show whitish, powdery spots on both sides of the leaves, resulting in chlorosis. The older leaves are attacked first. Fungicides, resistant cultivars and crop rotation are used as as management options.
Conidia develop in chains, are ellipsoid, with crenate (notched) edges and about 30 x 20 µm large. Ascospores are around 20 x 12-15 µm.
This fungus was previously often referred to as Sphaerotheca fuliginea (= Alphitomorpha fuliginea). See also Erysiphe cichoracearum which causes a similar disease on cucurbits.
