Podosphaera fuliginea (Schltdl.) U. Braun & S. Takam. 2000
This fungus is one of several pathogens causing powdery mildew on cucurbits, see also Golovinomyces cichoracearum. It is widely distributed and infected plants show the typical symptoms of white or greyish mycelium growth on the upper and lower sides of the leaves and the stems. In severe cases, infections can result in stunting, reduced fruit production, early defoliation and plant death.
Infections are initiated by spores landing on the leaf surface, germinating and penetrating the surface of the epidermal cells. Management includes mainly the use of resistant cultivars and fungicides.
