Phlebiopsis gigantea (Fr.) Jülich 1978

This wood decaying fungus is widely distributed in Europe and other regions. It causes white rot mainly of conifer logs and stumps like pine and spruce trees. It is used to initiate the process of paper pulping and as a biological control agent (by competition) of root rot, caused by Heterobasidion species. See the page Phlebiopsis gigantea (antagonist) for the latter aspect.
