Panicum (weeds) L.

This genus of grasses is widely distributed and contains more than 400 species. They grow in various environments and several species are cultivated as "millets" or switchgrass. However, some species are agricultural weeds, e.g. in crops like maize, soybean or sugarcane. Important weeds include for example fall panicum, Panicum dichotomiflorum. Guineagrass (previously Panicum maximum) is now listed under Megathyrsus maximus.

Some species can grow to a height of 3 m. The panicles can reach a length of 60 cm. The spikelets are usually solitary (rarely in pairs) and are typically dorsally compressed. Each spikelet has 2 florets, the upper one bisexual, the lower one male or sterile.
