Nassella trichotoma (weed) (Nees) Arech. - (serrated tussock, nassella tussock)

This grass is native in South America and a highly invasive weed of rangelands. It has spread to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Initial populations have also been recorded from Europe and North America. It is usually not consumed by grazing animals, and livestock can become sick, if fed only with N. trichotoma.

N. trichotoma is adapted to a dry, warmer-temperate climate and it grows in may types of soil. It is resistant to fire and frost, and one mature plant can produce up to 140,000 seeds every year. The individual plant can grow to a height of up to 70 cm.
