Monochamus saltuarius Gebler, 1830 - (Sakhalin pine sawyer)
This beetle is found in temperate parts of Asia and Europe. In Asia, it is one of several Monochamus species that transmit the lethal pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. In Korea alone, the nematode disease caused the death of more than 500 million pine trees, mainly Pinus koraiensis, between 2014 and 2016 (Kwon et al., 2018).
M. saltuarius is similar to Monochamus alternatus in morphology and biology, but is smaller with a length of around 15-20 mm. Both species actually prefer spruce (Picea) over pine trees (Akbulut & Stamps, 2012). Females lay eggs into the bark of a host tree and the emerging larvae feed on the inner bark, the cambium, and the outer sapwood. There is typically one generation per year.
