Monochamus alternatus (Hope, 1843) - (Japanese pine sawyer)
The beetle is found in eastern Asia and infests pine trees and other conifers. It is an important vector of the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) which causes the pine wilt disease. The beetle is attracted by diseased trees.
In Asia, control efforts against the pine wood nematode are mainly directed against this vector, using both felling and treating trees infected with the nematode, as well as the aerial application of insecticides against M. alternatus. The adults are around 20-25 mm long, larger than the very similar Monochamus saltuarius.
