Moko disease of banana (Ralstonia solanacearum phylotype II)
The bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum phylotype II causes an important disease of banana in various banana-growing regions like parts of Central and South America as well as in south-eastern Asia. In some of these areas serious disease outbreaks have occurred, like in Trinidad, the Philippines (Bugtok disease) and Malaysia. However, phylotype II also causes diseases of other crops (see the main page for Ralstonia solanacearum for information on those diseases).
The bacterium infects the vascular system. In bananas, the symptoms start with yellowing of the plants and tissue necrosis, followed by plant collapse. The fruits show internal discoloration and are inedible, sometimes hardened (Bugtok disease). A disease in Indonesia, called blood disease, causes similar symptoms, with a reddish colouration of the affected fruits. The blood disease bacterium is assigned to Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis.
