Ralstonia syzygii (Roberts et al. 1990) Vaneechoutte et al. 2004
The bacterium causes various diseases in Indonesia and some other countries in Asia, for example Sumatra disease of clove or blood disease of banana. The following subspecies have been described (Safni et al., 2014):
• Ralstonia syzygii subsp. syzygii - on clove
• Ralstonia syzygii subsp. indonesiensis - on tomato and clove
• Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis - causes the "blood disease of banana"
The blood disease causes wilt of banana plants in Indonesia. Symptoms include yellowing and wilting of the mature leaves, vascular discoloration, bacterial ooze, and reddish-brown fruit rot. The bacterium persists in the soil. Mechanisms of transmission include contaminated tools, infected suckers and flower visting insects. In Indonesia, the popular cooking variety Kepok is particular susceptible to the disease. The bacterium was originally described under the name Pseudomonas celebensis. A related disease (moko disease of banana) results similar symptoms and is found in Central and South America, as well as in south-eastern Asia. It is caused by Ralstonia solanacearum phylotype II.
