Miscanthus × giganteus (weed) - (giant miscanthus)
This plant is grown as a source of biofuel, but can be an agricultural weed. It can reach a height of 3-4 m and grows well under conditions of low nutrients and low rainfall. Once established, it is very difficult to remove due to its persistent rhizomes.
Giant miscanthus is a hybrid between diploid Miscanthus sinensis and tetraploid Miscanthus sacchariflorus, both of which can be agricultural weeds. Most cultivars are sterile (triploid), but the cultivar "PowerCane" is fertile (tetraploid) and invasive (Miriti et al., 2017). Sterile cultivars can also spread through rhizome fragments.
